ΠΡΟΣΤΑΤΕΥΜΕΝΕΣ ΟΙΚΟΛΟΓΙΚΑ ΣΗΜΑΝΤΙΚΑ ΠΕΡΙΟΧΕΣ

Οι προστατευμένες οικολογικά σημαντικά περιοχές της Ελλάδας μπορούν να διακριθούν στις εξής τρεις βασικές κατηγορίες:

  • Τις θεσμοθετημένες περιοχές όπως είναι οι Εθνικοί Δρυμοί, τα Αισθητικά Δάση, τα Διατηρητέα Μνημεία της Φύσης και τα Τοπία Ιδιαίτερου Φυσικού Κάλλους.(όπως ο ποταμός Βοϊδομάτης και η χαράδρα του Βίκου). Ο Ποταμός Βοϊδομάτης διασχίζει αρκετές κοινότητες και βρίσκεται εντός των ορίων της περιοχής GR 2130001 – Εθνικός Δρυμός Βίκου-Αώου.
  • Τις περιοχές του Εθνικού καταλόγου NATURA 2000 (περιοχές κοινοτικού ενδιαφέροντος) και τις Ζώνες Ειδικής Προστασίας της Ορνιθοπανίδας (SPA).
  • Τις μη θεσμοθετημένες περιοχές όπως είναι οι Σημαντικές Περιοχές για τα Πουλιά (IBA).Ο ποταμός Καλαμάς αποτελεί μια τέτοια ζώνη όπου δεν επιτρέπεται το κηνύγι από τις 20 Αυγούστου έως τις 14 Σεπτεμβρίου κάθε κυνηγετικής περιόδου των παρακάτω ειδών: τρυγονιού, φάσας, αγριοπερίστερου, ορτυκιού, σιταρήθρας, τσίχλας, κεδρότσιχλας, κοκκινότσιχλας, και γερακότσιχλας. Από τις 15 Σεπτεμβρίου επιτρέπεται παντού το κυνήγι τους (εκτός των καταφυγίων), καθώς επίσης και των υπόλοιπων θηρεύσιμων ειδών.

Ο ποταμός Καλαμάς εμφανίζεται ως ένας από τους ελληνικούς υγρότοπους που είχαν απογραφεί το 1991 από ομάδα εργασίας του Ελληνικού Κέντρου Βιότοπων – Υγρότοπων (ΕΚΒΥ). Πηγάζει από το όρος Δούσκο και εκβάλει στο Ιόνιο Πέλαγος. Το συνολικό του μήκος είναι 115 χλμ. Παραπόταμοι του Καλαμά είναι: ο Σμόλιτσας, η Τύρια, ο Γορμός, ο Μέζερος, ο Βελτσιστικός, ο Κούτσης, η Μπάνια, η Λαγκαβίστα, και το Καλπακώτικο Ρέμα. Μέσα στην λεκάνη του Καλαμά υπάρχει η λίμνη Τζαραβίνα, έκτασης 22 τετ. χλμ. και βάθους 35 μέτρα. Στην ευρύτερη περιοχή των πηγών του Καλαμά διαμορφώνεται επίσης η λίμνη της Καλλιθέας (Γράμμοστη), η οποία βρίσκεται στην βόρεια πλευρά του υψώματος του Προφήτη Ηλία.
