Ποταμός Καλαμάς

Πρόκειται για τον δεύτερο σε μήκος ποταμό της Ηπείρου, αφού από τις πηγές του ως την θάλασσα διανύει μια απόσταση 96 χιλιομέτρων. Ονομάζεται ακόμη και σήμερα με τα δύο του ονόματα. Το αρχαίο Θύαμις και το σύγχρονο Καλαμάς. Το αρχαίο όνομα Θύαμις προέρχεται από την λέξη «Θύω» η οποία σημαίνει «κινούμαι άγρια». Και πράγματι τα νερά του Θύαμη κινούνται άγρια.

Ο Καλαμάς αποτελεί σημαντικό τμήμα της αλυσίδας των υγροτόπων της Δυτικής Ελλάδας. Κύριο χαρακτηριστικό του ποταμού είναι οι εύφορες ημιορεινές κοιλάδες με τις πολλές λοφοσειρές, οι υδάτινες λεκάνες, οι στενές βραχώδεις πλαγιές που καλύπτονται από πυκνή βλάστηση, τα προσχωγεννή εδάφη με παρόχθια βλάστηση, αλλά και οι εκβολές του στην θάλασσα, οι οποίες δημιουργούν προσχώσεις και μικρές νησίδες.

Ο Καλαμάς αναπτύσσεται στο Β.Δ. τμήμα της χώρας μας, στους νομούς Ιωαννίνων και Θεσπρωτίας. Πηγάζει από το Β.Δ. άκρο του Νομού Ιωαννίνων και καταλήγει στο Ιόνιο Πέλαγος. Έχει μήκος 115χ.μ., λεκάνη απορροής 1.831τ.χμ., μέγιστη παροχή 74 κυβικά μέτρα ανά δευτερόλεπτο και αποχετεύει τη λεκάνη που σχηματίζεται ανάμεσα στα όρη Κασιδιάρης και Μιτσικέλι.

Εκτείνεται από τις πηγές του Γορμού βόρεια, έως τα στενά της Βροσίνας νότια, περνά στο Νομό Θεσπρωτίας και καταλήγει στο Ιόνιο Πέλαγος. Κατά μήκος του ποταμού βρίσκεται η κοιλάδα του Άνω Καλαμά, τα υψίπεδα της Ζίτσας και τα όρη Κουρέντων (υψόμετρο 1.172μ.) ανατολικά, ενώ στα δυτικά αναπτύσσονται ο Κασιδιάρης (υψόμετρο 1.329μ.) και τα όρη της Παραμυθιάς (υψόμετρο 1.657μ.). Κύριο στοιχείο της περιοχής είναι ο μεγάλος αριθμός χαμηλών λόφων, υψιπέδων και κάμπων με πολλά ρέματα να δημιουργούν ένα ξεχωριστό σύμπλεγμα.

Οι κύριες πηγές του βρίσκονται στο όρος Νεμέρτσικα απ΄ όπου πηγάζει ο ποταμός Γορμός που κυλά με Νότια κατεύθυνση, ώσπου συναντά στο ύψος του κάμπου του Παρακαλάμου τα νερά του ποταμού Νεζερού Δυτικά και των πηγών Δολιανών, Λιμπούσδα, Καλπακίου και Βελλάς Ανατολικά.

Το ξεχωριστό αυτό υδάτινο οικοσύστημα αποτελείται από σπουδαίους βιότοπους βαλκανικών ενδημικών ειδών, που σε συνδυασμό με την ύπαρξη σημαντικών αρχαιολογικών και ιστορικών χώρων, προσδίδουν στην περιοχή σημαντική σπουδαιότητα. Η περιοχή των στενών του ποταμού, έκτασης 1.867 εκταρίων και οι εκβολές του έκτασης 8.481 εκταρίων, έχουν χαρακτηριστεί Περιοχή Προστασίας της Φύσης.
