Στην Δημοτική ενότητα Άνω Πωγωνίου υπάρχουν περιοχές με ιδιαίτερη φυσική ομορφιά. Τέτοιες περιοχές αναγνωρισμένης σημασίας, που συγκεντρώνουν σημαντική χλωρίδα και πανίδα είναι η περιοχή Ωραιόκαστρου, το δάσος της Μερόπης-Παλαιόπυργου, η κοιλάδα του Γορμού. Δάση βελανιδιάς, μικρά φράγματα ανάμεσα στους λόφους, διάφορες πηγές και ρέματα χαρακτηρίζουν το φυσικό περιβάλλον της περιοχής. Ο ποταμός Γορμός πηγάζει από το όρος Νεμέρτσικα και κυλά στην περιοχή που εκτείνεται από το Ωραιόκαστρο μέχρι τον Παρακάλαμο.

Στο δάσος της περιοχής Μερόπης-Παλαιόπυργου συναντά κανείς τέσσερα είδη δρυός, τις: Quercus Frainetto, Quercus Cerris (άγρια βελανιδιά), Quercus pubescences(δέντρο) και Quercus ΜMacedonia (μακεδονική βελανιδιά), καθώς και μερικά χαρακτηριστικά είδη της συνένωσης Οστρυάς και Γαύρου: Ostryo Capinion(μεράντζα), Ostrya carpinifolia (οστρυά), και carrinus orientalis (σκυλόγαυρος). Το Juniperus communis (θαμνόδεντρο) σχηματίζει θαμνώνες στην περιοχή του όρους Νεμέρτσικα.

Στους θαμνότοπους μέσου υψομέτρου μπορούμε να συναντήσουμε τα: Fraxinus ornus (μικρός φράξος) και Acer pseudoplatanus (ψευτοπλάτανος). Στην περιοχή υπάρχουν και σπάνια είδη φυτών. Αξιοσημείωτο είναι το είδος Solenanthus albanicus το οποίο περιλαμβάνεται στην κατηγορία των σπάνιων ειδών.

Το Πωγωνήσιο τοπίο αποτυπώνει με μεγάλη ευκρίνεια και αποδίδει με μία ιδιαίτερη αισθητική τη μορφή του εδάφους. Η περιοχή χαρακτηρίζεται από πολλούς χαμηλούς λόφους και πολλές ανώμαλες χαραδρώσεις. Ο ποταμός Γορμός, περνώντας από τον Άγιο Κοσμά, σχηματίζει μια ενδιαφέρουσα χαράδρα πνιγμένη στα αιωνόβια πλατάνια και καταλήγει στον ποταμό Kαλαμά, στο ύψος της λίμνης Ζαραβίνας. Αξιόλογοι είναι οι καταρράκτες του Ωραιόκαστρου και του Παλαιόπυργου. Ειδικότερα στον Παλαιόπυργο σημαντικοί είναι οι γεωλογικοί σχηματισμοί (κολυμβήθρες) που οφείλονται στη διάβρωση του πετρώματος από τον ποταμό Γορμό και το ρέμα Γκουρμπίτσα.
